  1. A city of northeast Ohio on Lake Erie. A port of entry and industrial center, the city was laid out in 1796 by Moses Cleveland (1754-1806). Population: 444,000.

  2. A city of southeast Tennessee east-northeast of Chattanooga. It is a trade center with varied industries. Population: 38,600.

Word Origin & History

Cleveland 
laid out 1796 by Gen. Moses Cleaveland and later named for him. His descendants included U.S. President Grover Cleveland. The family name is from place names in England based on M.E. cleove, a variant of cliff.
