Fig. 803 is an instance of a convex coal-field exhibited in Staffordshire, at the Castle-hill, close to the town of Dudley.

From its situation and importance this coal-field is better known than any other in India.

The area of this coal field is estimated at about thirty-six thousand square miles.

In the centre of the coal-field is an elevated moorland tract formed of the grits and shales of the Millstone Grit series.
