1910–15; < German, orig. Bavarian and Austrian dialect; Middle High German vaschanc, vastschang, perhaps equivalent to vast- Lent (German Fasten; see fast2) + schanc distribution or pouring of drinks, referring to the dispensing of liquor prohibited during Lent

Fasching is always a great word to know.
So is callithumpian. Does it mean:
a children's mummer's parade, as on the Fourth of July, with prizes for the best costumes.
a scrap or morsel of food left at a meal.
