any nocturnal beetle of the family Lampyridae, characterized by a soft body with a light-producing organ at the rear of the abdomen.
Also called glowfly, lightning bug.

n.  Any of various nocturnal beetles of the family Lampyridae, characteristically having luminescent chemicals in the posterior tip of the abdomen that produce a flashing light. Also called lightning bug. See Regional Note at lightning bug.

Firefly

Fire"fly`\, n.; pl. Fireflies. (Zo["o]l.) Any luminous winged insect, esp. luminous beetles of the family Lampyrid[ae].

Note: The common American species belong to the genera Photinus and Photuris, in which both sexes are winged. The name is also applied to luminous species of Elaterid[ae]. See Fire beetle.
