The GNU Compiler
Collection, which currently contains front ends for C
, Objective-C, Fortran
, and Ada
, as well as libraries for these languages (libstdc++, libgcj, etc).
GCC formerly meant the GNU C
compiler, which is a very high quality, very portable compiler for C
and Objective C
The compiler supports multiple front-ends and multiple back-ends by translating first into Register Transfer Language
and from there into assembly code
for the target architecture.
