an ancient village in Assyria, E of Nineveh: Alexander the Great defeated Darius III here in 331 b.c. The battle is often mistakenly called “battle of Arbela.”

Gaugamela is situated in one of the wide plains that lie between the Tigris and the mountains of Kurdistan.

The great battle, of which we have been speaking, was confessedly fought at Gaugamela.

Arbela was probably the city, and Gaugamela the temple; both sacred to the same Deity, under different names.

The decisive battle with Darius was fought at Gaugamela, not at Arbela, as most writers tell us.
