Kash·mir   (kāsh'mîr', kāsh-mîr')   
  1. also Cash·mere (kāsh'mîr', kāsh-mîr') A historical region of northwest India and northeast Pakistan. Conquered by the Mogul emperor Akbar 1586, it later came under the control of Afghanistan (1757) and a Sikh empire (1819). After 1846 it was part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Kashmir [(kash-meer)]

A state of India, in its extreme north. When mainly Hindu India became independent of Great Britain in 1947, many of its predominantly Muslim areas split off as Pakistan. Kashmir, a mainly Muslim area, remained part of India, which led to persistent conflicts between India and Pakistan.

cashmere 
1684, old spelling of Kashmir, Himalayan kingdom where wool was obtained from long-haired goats. As a name for this kind of woolen fabric, favored for shawls, etc., or for the shawls themselves, it is attested from 1822.
