Marietta

city, seat (1834) of Cobb county, northwestern Georgia, U.S. It lies about 20 miles (30 km) northwest of Atlanta, in the Blue Ridge foothills. A settlement is thought to have existed on the site in the 1820s. The town was probably named for the wife of prominent jurist and legislator Thomas W. Cobb. Its growth was stimulated in the 1840s by the arrival of the Western and Atlantic Railroad
