"small, strong European falcon," c.1325, from Anglo-Fr. merilun, an aphetic form of O.Fr. esmerillon (Fr. émerillon), from Frank. *smiril (cf. O.H.G. smerlo, Ger. Schmerl "merlin"). Sp. esmerejon, It. smeriglio also are Gmc. loan-words.
