They were called Sicarii, from the short dagger, sica, with which they secretly slew their opponents.

Cicero names the person, Sica, who had shown him hospitality near Vibo.

Plutarch calls him Οὐίβιος Σικελὸς ἀνήρ, as if he had mistaken the name Sica.
