Tarai

In 1816 by the treaty of Segauli the Nepal tarai was ceded to the British, but was given back in 1860.

A part of this, called the Bhitari Tarai, is separated from the great plain of India by a small ridge of hills.

In the upper or northern tarai, along the base of the hills, the Mechs form the principal ethnical feature.

The Tarai is low-lying, marshy land covered with tall, feathery grass, beautifully monotonous.

It is also the language of the inhabitants of the neighbouring Tarai districts of Nepal.
