Origin of agal¹

1850–55; < dialectal Arabic ʿagāl, variant of ʿiqāl cord, rope

They are either white, or red, or black, and are formed chiefly of agal-agal a marine cellular plant.

Agal-agal derives its name from Tanjong Agal on the north coast of Borneo; where it was originally collected.

The later identification with Ea appears to be due to the idea of 'strength' involved in the name of Nin-agal.
