Whoever this may have been, he was a simple official, not like Ahimaaz, a personal friend of David.
But Joab did not wish that Ahimaaz should be the bearer of the news.
And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok.
Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi.
While the king was saying thus, Ahimaaz appeared, and worshipped the king.
And the watchman said, "I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok."
Return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.
The sons of the priests, Ahimaaz and Jonathan, would be of great service in bringing him information.
A friend offered to Joab to carry the news—Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok the priest.
brother of anger = irascible. (1.) The father Ahinoam, the wife of Saul (1 Sam. 14:50). (2.) The son and successor of Zadok in the office of high priest (1 Chr. 6:8, 53). On the occasion of the revolt of Absalom he remained faithful to David, and was of service to him in conveying to him tidings of the proceedings of Absalom in Jerusalem (2 Sam. 15:24-37; 17:15-21). He was swift of foot, and was the first to carry to David tidings of the defeat of Absalom, although he refrained, from delicacy of feeling, from telling him of his death (2 Sam. 18:19-33).
