annelid
"segmented worm," 1834, from Fr. annélide, source of the phylum name Annelida, coined in Mod.L. 1801 by Fr. naturalist J.B.P. Lamarck (1744-1829), from annelés "ringed ones" (from L. anulus "little ring," a dim. of anus) + Gk. eidos "form, shape" (see -oid).
