Anopheles
genus of mosquitoes, 1899, Mod.L., coined 1818 by Ger. entomologist Johann Wilhelm Meigen (17641845) from Gk. anopheles "useless, hurtful, harmful," from an-, privative prefix, + ophelos "use, help, advantage" (see Ophelia). So called because it conveys malaria.
