"spider," O.E. attorcoppa, lit. "poison-head," from ator "poison," from P.Gmc. *aitra- "poisonous ulcer" (cf. O.N. eitr, Ger. eiter) + copp "top, summit, round head," probably also "spider" (cf. cobweb and Du. spinne-cop "spider").
