In this respect the Tantric school resembles the teaching of Bodhidharma but not in detail.
His name was Bodhidharma and he appears to have been the younger son of an Indian Prince.
It will be convenient to summarize briefly here the history of Bodhidharma's school.
Bodhidharma said that he preached the seal of the heart (hsinyin).
But Bodhidharma had done with Emperors, and settled in a small country temple, where he lived till his death nine years later.
The T'ien-t'ai school has some originality, and native and foreign ideas were combined by the followers of Bodhidharma.
Though founded by Bodhidharma it did not win the sympathy and esteem of the cultivated classes until the Sung period.
But the school of Bodhidharma continues the series, reckoning him as the twenty-eighth, and the first of the Chinese Patriarchs.
Bodhidharma indicated that he did not think this test of endurance remarkable.
That this feeling was just is shown by the fact that the school of Bodhidharma is still practically one in teaching.
