breaker card

the first card in the carding process, used to open the raw stock and to convert it into sliver form.

First recorded in 1870–75

A receptacle, very similar to that used at the breaker card, appears near the far end of the softening machine in Fig. 13.

The sliver from the can of the breaker card may be wound into balls, or it may be taken direct to the finisher card.
