  1. A region and former duchy of north-central Germany. Established in the 13th century, the duchy became independent in 1918 before joining the Weimar Republic.

  2. also Braun·schweig (broun'shvīk') A city of north-central Germany east-southeast of Hanover. Reputedly founded in 861, it is an industrial and commercial center. Population: 245,000.
