Castagno

Left an orphan in his boyhood, Andrea herded the cattle of an uncle at the hamlet of Castagno (whence the painter's name).

We may there trace the school of Castagno, the master of Piero, in the harsh features, coloured in a strong and juicy manner.

On Mount Ætna is the famous Castagno di cento cavalli, so called from its having sheltered a hundred mounted cavaliers.

The latter had the secret of painting in oils, and yielded to Castagno's entreaties to impart it to him.
