< NL (Linnaeus) < Gk kēro- cero- + NL -pegia, perh. < Gk -pēgia, n. deriv. of pēgnýnai to stick in, fix in; perh. to be taken as “candle holder”; cf. Linnaeus' specific name candelabrum
