dry gangrene

death of tissue owing to arterial obstruction without subsequent bacterial decomposition and putrefaction.

First recorded in 1930–35

If the part is aseptic it shrivels, and presents the ordinary features of dry gangrene.

The dead portion is cast off, as in other forms of dry gangrene, by the formation of a line of demarcation.

This may pass off in a few days, or may increase in severity, with the formation of bullæ, and end in dry gangrene.

Dry gangrene is one of the most virulent forms of poisoning caused by partaking of ergotised bread.

Dry gangrene is seldom dangerous, but the rapidity of its spread will indicate its virulence.
