city, eastern Uttar Pradesh state, northern India. It lies east of Lucknow, on the Ghaghara River. Faizabad was founded in 1730 by Sadat 'Ali Khan, the first nawab of Oudh, who made it his capital but spent little time there. The third nawab, Shuja'-ud-Dawlah, resided there and built a fort over the river in 1764; the mausoleums for him and his wife are located in the city. In 1775 the capital of Oudh was moved to Lucknow, and in the 19th century Faizabad fell into decay
