a crisp, deep-fried cake, made by pouring batter through a funnel into fat or oil, usually in a spiral shape, and dusted with powdered sugar.

Especially beignets, which are the New Orleans cousins of Italian zeppoli, Spanish churros, and state fair funnel cake.

And given the choice of pancakes or funnel cake, the child in us (the one who looooves the fair) will always choose funnel cake.

The pancakes got there, realized they were underdressed, jumped into a vat of hot oil...and came out as funnel cake.
