Gauhati

Gauhati is still the headquarters of the district and of the Brahmaputra Valley division, though no longer a military cantonment.

Gauhati is an important centre of river trade, and the largest seat of commerce in Assam.

A second offset, under the name of the Kalang river, rejoins the parent stream a short distance above the town of Gauhati.

The population is entirely rural, the only town with upwards of 5000 inhabitants being Gauhati (11,661).

Gauhati suffered very severely from the earthquake of the 12th of June 1897.
