town and port, capital of the lan (county) of Halland, southwestern Sweden, on the eastern shore of the Kattegat, at the mouth of Nissan River. The town was founded at the beginning of the 14th century and often served as the meeting place of the rulers and delegates of the three northern kingdoms. Until 1645, when the lan was ceded to Sweden, Halmstad was part of Danish territory
