capital of Al-Isma'iliyah muhafazah (governorate), northeastern Egypt. The city is about at the midpoint of the Suez Canal, on the northwestern shore of Lake At-Timsah. The lake, in a natural depression, was connected to the Gulf of Suez of the Red Sea in pharaonic times.
