Is·tri·a   (ĭs'trē-ə)   
A peninsula of northwest Croatia projecting into the northeast Adriatic Sea. The original Istrian inhabitants were overthrown by the Romans in the second century A.D. Istria was subsequently occupied by Austria, Venice, and Italy. All but the area surrounding Trieste was awarded to Yugoslavia in 1946.
