  1. A twentieth-century American writer and critic, best known for his classic Let Us Now Praise Famous Men , with photos by Walker Evans, an account of sharecroppers ( see sharecropping ) in Alabama during the 1930s. He was posthumously awarded a 1958 Pulitzer Prize for A Death in the Family , his only novel .
