town, south central Western Australia. Together with neighbouring Boulder to the south, it forms the principal settlement of the East Coolgardie goldfield, on the western fringe of the Nullarbor Plain and the Great Victoria Desert. Mining began with a rush following Paddy Hannan's discovery of gold in 1893, and the main deposit of deep, rich ores came to be known as the Golden Mile reef. Kalgoorlie developed as Hannan's Find; its present name is a corruption of the Aboriginal word galgurli, an indigenous scrub.
