  1. (lē'mə) The capital and largest city of Peru, in the west-central part of the country near the Pacific Ocean. Founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1535, it was the capital of Spain's New World empire until the 19th century. The city was largely rebuilt after earthquakes in 1687 and 1746. Population: 7,640,000.

  2. (lī'mə) A city of northwest Ohio south-southwest of Toledo. It is a processing and marketing center for a rich farm area. Population: 38,200.

Lima [(lee-muh)]

Capital of Peru and largest city in the country, located in western Peru; the country's economic center.

Note: Lima was the capital of the empire of Spain in the New World until the nineteenth century.

Peru

Republic in western South America, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Ecuador to the northwest, Colombia to the northeast, Brazil and Bolivia to the east, and Chile to the south. Its capital and largest city is Lima.

Note: Achieved independence from Spain in 1821.
Note: Peru was the heart of the Inca Empire, which flourished from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries. The remains of the empire include the fabled stone fortress of Machu Picchu.
