American educator who as the first secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education (1837-1848) introduced reforms and regulations that greatly influenced American public education.
Mann   (mān, män)   
German writer whose fascination with the artist's role in society and concern for the intellectual and spiritual well-being of Germany permeate his works, including Death in Venice (1912) and The Magic Mountain (1924). He won the 1929 Nobel Prize for literature.
