Ma·ta·be·le·land (mä'tə-běl'ā-lānd', -tä-) A former province of Rhodesia, between the Limpopo and Zambezi rivers. Inhabited by the Ndebele after 1827, it came under the control of the British South Africa Company in 1889. The area is now divided into the two provinces of Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South, in southern Zimbabwe.
