O.E. osle "blackbird," from W.Gmc. *amslon- (cf. O.H.G. amsala, Ger. amsel), probably from PIE *ams- "black, blackbird" (cf. L. merula "blackbird," Welsh mwyalch "blackbird, thrush," Bret. moualch "ouzel").
