Origin of picrate¹

First recorded in 1865–70; picr(ic acid) + -ate ²

With ammonium picrate and sodium picrate, yellowish red color.

Later it was found advantageous to use calcium picrate instead of picric acid.

The weight of this subtracted from the first weight, of course, gives that of the brucine picrate.

This process destroys the brucine picrate, but leaves the strychnine picrate untouched.

The precipitate contains the picrate of trimethylenediamine, mixed with the picrates of cadaverine and creatinine.
