Pinsk   (pĭnsk)   
A city of southwest Belarus south-southwest of Minsk. First mentioned in chronicles in 1097, it was the capital of the Pinsk duchy in the 13th century. Pinsk passed to Lithuania in 1320, to Poland in 1569, to Russia in 1793, back to Poland in 1921, and to the USSR in 1945. Population: 130,000.

Pinsk

city, Brest oblast (province), Belarus, situated at the confluence of the Pina and Pripet rivers. Pinsk was first mentioned in 1097 and was the seat of a Russian princedom. It passed under Lithuanian rule (13th-16th century), then Polish (1569-1793), Russian (1793-World War I), Polish again (1920-39), and then Soviet (with German occupation during 1941-44). Pinsk lies at the eastern end of the Dneprovsko-Bugsky Canal and is a significant river port. There are woodworking industries, metalworking, manufacture of artificial leather, and shipbuilding and repair yards. Pop. (1991 est.) 123,800
