a small tree, Planera aquatica, of the elm family, growing in moist ground in the southern U.S., bearing a small, ovoid, nutlike fruit and yielding a compact light-brown wood.
Also called water elm.


Origin:
1800–10, Americanism; named after I. J. Planer, 18th-century German botanist
