Origin of pteroma¹

< Latin pterōma < Greek ptérōma

When the whole flat surface forming the floor of the passageway (see Pteroma) is considered, the word stereobate is employed.

By them a passage was formed around the cella, the pteroma, the ceiling of which was most richly decorated with cofferings.

The floor of the pteroma of the great temple at Olympia was of a pebble cement, the small inner staircases of wood.
