n.  A scanning pattern of parallel lines that form the display of an image projected on a cathode-ray tube of a television set or display screen.

[German, from Latin rāstrum, rake (from the resemblance of the parallel lines to a rake's path); see rēd- in Indo-European roots.]

raster hardware
The area of a video display that is covered by sweeping the electron beam of the display in a series of horizontal lines from top to bottom. The beam then returns to the top during the vertical flyback interval.
