Ré·un·ion   (rē-yōōn'yən, rā-ü-nyôɴ')   
An island of France in the western Indian Ocean southwest of Mauritius. Previously uninhabited, it was visited by the Portuguese in the early 16th century and first colonized by the French in the mid-1600s as the Isle de Bourbon. Renamed Réunion in 1793, it became an overseas department in 1946.

1. A second union; union formed anew after separation, secession, or discord; as, a reunion of parts or particles of matter; a reunion of parties or sects.

2. An assembling of persons who have been separated, as of a family, or the members of a disbanded regiment; an assembly so composed.

reunion 
1610, from re- "back, again" + union (q.v.). Cf. Fr. réunion (1549). The island of Reunion was so named by a convention in 1793, "without any particular reason."
