A city of northeast China east-southeast of Beijing. It was devastated in 1976 by a massive earthquake in which an estimated 242,000 people were killed. Population: 1,270,000.

Tangshan

industrial city, eastern Hebei sheng (province), northeastern China. It is situated in the northeastern portion of the North China Plain, about 30 miles (48 km) north of the Bo Hai (Gulf of Chihli) and 65 miles (105 km) northeast of central Tianjin metropolis. Pop. (2002 est.) city, 1,498,175; (2007 est.) urban agglom., 1,879,000.
