The capital and largest city of Uzbekistan in the foothills of the Tian Shan. One of the oldest cities of central Asia, it was ruled by Arabs and then Turks until 1865, when it was annexed by Russia. In 1930 it replaced Samarqand as the capital of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic. Population: 1,970,000.

Uzbekistan [(ooz-bek-uh-stan, ooz-bek-uh-stahn)]

Republic located in central-west Asia, bounded by Kazakhstan to the west and north, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to the east, Afghanistan to the south, and Turkmenistan to the southwest. Its capital and largest city is Tashkent.

Note: This former member of the Soviet Union declared its independence in 1991.
