Toulon
town and port, capital of Var departement, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region, southeastern France. It is France's principal naval base and has an arsenal, the most important of the Mediterranean drydocks, and shipbuilding yards. Toulon's fine bay opens to the east. The most sheltered part, the Petite Rade and the Darse Vieille, in the west, is largely under control of the French Navy, with a well-protected anchorage. The Grande Rade, to the east, is easier of access. The Faron Mountains form an imposing backdrop to the town.
