Tuskegee

city, seat of Macon county, east-central Alabama, U.S., adjacent to Tuskegee National Forest, about 40 miles (65 km) east of Montgomery. It was founded in 1833, and its name was a variation of Taskigi, a nearby Creek Indian village. Fort Decatur (built 1814), near the city on the Tallapoosa River, was the original burial place of John Sevier, a noted frontiersman who had been appointed commissioner to determine the boundary of the Creek lands
