an optical image formed by the apparent divergence of rays from a point, rather than their actual divergence from a point

When placed over the microscope ocular the divisions of this scale measure the actual size of the virtual image in millimetres.

This virtual image may be seen by looking through the lens toward the object.

The other lens, the eyepiece forms a virtual image of this real image.
