A city of west-central Germany on the Rhine River west of Frankfurt. Founded as a Celtic settlement in the third century B.C., it has been a noted spa since Roman times. Wiesbaden became a free imperial city c. A.D. 1242 and passed to Prussia in 1866. Population: 276,000.
