c.1386, from adj. or gen. form of O.E. æspe "aspen tree, white poplar," from P.Gmc. *aspo (cf. O.N. ösp, M.Du. espe, O.H.G. aspa, Ger. Espe), from PIE *apsa "aspen" (cf. Lith. opuse). The current form i Eng. probably arose from phrases such as aspen leaf, aspen bark.
