Pa. Dutch ornamental bird design, from Ger., "goldfinch," lit. "thistle-finch," from O.H.G. distilvinko, from distil "thistle" (see thistle) + O.H.G. finco "finch," from PIE *(s)ping- "sparrow, finch." So called because the bird feeds on thistle seeds.
