1520–30; < L fūmigātus, ptp. of fūmigāre to smoke, fumigate, equiv. to fūm(us) smoke + -igāre (v. suffix based on -ig-, n. deriv. of agere to drive, do, as in remex, s. remig- oarsman, hence remigāre to row)
