an implement used in seal hunting, consisting of an iron or steel hook, sometimes with a hammer opposite, mounted on a long wooden pole.

Origin:
1975–80; < Norwegian hakepigg, equivalent to hake hook (cf. hake, hook) + pigg spike (akin to pike1)
